In today's industrial automation systems, memory programmable controls (PLC) play a central role. They connect measuring instruments and control links to the process via conventional wiring. However, a PLC is not fully decoupled from the industrial environment, so that overvoltage peaks and transition flows can influence their function. In order to adjust the voltage and / or current and to provide the PLC with an appropriate galvanic separation, the appropriate interface should be installed per starting point, which regulates both the voltage and current levels and provides a separation protection. Such interfaces are provided by the relay and optocoppler series of ABB. They allow a wide-ranging adjustment of the voltage (from 5 to 250 V) and current (from 0.01 to 8 A) and a high isolation between input and output from 2 to 4 kV. For high switching frequencies at low switching loads, transistor, MOS-FET or triac outputs can be selected.
